A SMARTER WAY TO RESTORE

Stop Spending Weeks Sanding, Guessing and Hoping for a Good Result

Many DIY deck restorations become an endless process because people rely on heavy mechanical sanding, punch down every nail, use only a light clean or combine products without knowing whether they work together.

That can mean several weekends of hard work, unnecessary timber removal and constant worry that the finished deck will not come up the way you expected.

01
Heavy mechanical sanding

Can remove healthy timber and still struggle to clear old coating from board gaps, edges and detailed areas.

02
Punching every nail

Adds hours of labour and can create visible holes, loosen fixings or damage older boards unnecessarily.

03
Relying on a light clean

May improve the appearance but can leave failed coating, contamination and residue behind the new finish.

04
Trial, error and mixed advice

Projects stretch across multiple weekends while you change methods and worry whether the final result will look right.

A Proven Process That Removes the Guesswork

  • Products matched to your deck condition and desired finish
  • Chemical preparation before aggressive sanding
  • Step-by-step instructions from preparation to protection
  • Light sanding only where genuinely required
  • Technical support before and during the project
No endless trial and error. No unnecessary sanding. No wondering whether you chose the wrong system.

WHY SEALIX EXISTS

Built to Help People Avoid the Costly Mistakes We Regularly See on Job Sites

Through Viccon Coatings, I kept seeing timber finishes fail for the same reasons.

Sometimes maintenance had been left too long. But often the bigger problem was the wrong preparation product, the wrong finish, incompatible products—or a combination of all three.

The result was peeling coatings, uneven colour, unnecessary heavy sanding and expensive restoration work that could often have been avoided with the right advice from the beginning.

That is why I created Sealix.

Sealix exists to help homeowners and contractors understand what to use, when to use it and why, so they can restore and maintain timber with more confidence and fewer costly mistakes.

Our missionTo educate and support homeowners and contractors who want to improve their knowledge, using our years of practical experience on the tools through Viccon Coatings.

We do not just offer products. We share the systems, lessons and practical knowledge gained from restoring real decks in real aussie conditions.

REAL SEALIX PROJECT

See What Correct Preparation Reveals

The correct process removes failed coatings, restores the timber and creates a clean, even surface ready for protection.

Maintain early. Restore only when needed.

A timely maintenance clean and recoat is easier and less expensive than waiting for full coating failure.

WHY PREPARATION MATTERS

The Finish Is Only as Good as the Surface Underneath

Most deck coating problems begin before the oil or sealer is applied. Old coating, grey timber fibres, tannins, dirt, moisture or chemical residue can stop the new finish from penetrating or bonding correctly.

Patchy colourUneven absorption creates light and dark areas.
Peeling or flakingNew coating cannot hold to a weak surface.
Sticky areasOld product or trapped residue can affect curing.
Early failurePoor preparation shortens the life of the finish.
1
Strip or Deep Clean

Match the preparation method to the existing surface.

↓
2
Rejuvenate and Neutralise

Restore the timber and remove chemical residue and tannin staining.

↓
3
Dry and Lightly Sand

Smooth raised fibres and only finish once the timber is fully dry.

↓
4
Apply the Right Finish

Choose a penetrating oil or coated finish based on the look and maintenance you want.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PREPARATION

Strip or Deep Clean?

The correct choice depends on what is already on the timber.

BARE, GREY OR WEATHERED

Deep Clean + Rejuvenate

Choose this when the timber is bare, grey, weathered, newly installed, dirty, tannin-stained or previously treated with a penetrating oil with no substantial film remaining.

What it does

  • Removes dirt, tannins, mould and organic build-up
  • Restores weathered timber
  • Brightens and prepares the surface
  • Creates a clean base for oil or coating
Do not choose this when a visible coating is peeling, flaking or sitting on top of the timber.
OLD COATING OR PEELING

Strip + Rejuvenate

Choose this when old oil, stain, sealer or coating remains, especially where the surface is patchy, peeling, sticky or heavily built up.

What it does

  • Softens and removes failed finishes
  • Resets the timber to a clean surface
  • Neutralises stripping residue
  • Prepares the deck for a compatible new finish
Heavy build-up: some decks may need a second stripper application or mechanical assistance.

CHOOSE YOUR FINISH

Penetrating Oil or Coated Finish?

There is no single finish that is best for every deck. The right choice depends on the appearance you want and how you prefer to maintain it.

🌿
NATURAL / MATTE

Penetrating Oil

Best for those who want a natural timber appearance with simple long-term maintenance.

  • Low-build, natural appearance
  • Highlights the timber grain
  • Generally will not peel like a surface film
  • Easier to refresh when maintained on time
Important: clear oil allows natural greying over time. Colour tones improve UV protection and colour retention.
✨
POLISHED LOOK

Film-Forming Finish

Best for those who want a richer colour with a protective surface coating.

  • Stronger colour enhancement
  • More uniform appearance
  • Visible protective film
  • Good colour retention when maintained correctly
Important: maintenance must happen before the coating breaks down or peels.
🛡️
PREMIUM POLISHED LOOK

Primer + Film Finish

Best for those who want the highest level of protection and a premium, uniform finish.

  • Primer improves adhesion
  • Better foundation for the finish
  • More consistent colour development
  • Suitable for demanding hardwood applications
System: one primer coat followed by two finish coats.

No finish is maintenance-free. The best-performing system is the one applied over correctly prepared timber and maintained before full breakdown.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Deck Restoration Questions

Clear answers before you choose, prepare and apply your products.

Choose Strip + Rejuvenate when old oil, stain, sealer or peeling coating remains. Choose Deep Clean + Rejuvenate when the timber is bare, grey, weathered, new or previously treated with a penetrating oil and no substantial film remains.

Only when the existing finish is clean, sound and compatible. If the surface is sticky, patchy, peeling, heavily built up or absorbing unevenly, it should be properly prepared first.

Not always. Chemical preparation removes coating and contamination from the grain and board edges. A light finishing sand is still recommended after preparation to smooth raised fibres and remove minor residue.

It helps neutralise chemical residue, remove tannin and rust staining, restore the natural timber appearance and create a better surface for the new finish.

The timber must be fully dry. Drying may take one to several days depending on temperature, airflow, timber density, shade and recent weather. A moisture reading below approximately 15% is the safest guide.

Yes. They are suitable for common exterior timbers including Merbau, Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, Jarrah, Ironbark and treated pine. Always test a small area first.

It is intended for many oil, stain and deck coating systems. Very heavy, unusual, epoxy or two-pack coatings may require testing, repeat applications or mechanical removal.

Some decks have multiple layers, heavy build-up, uneven coating thickness or difficult areas. Product quantity, dwell time and pressure-washing performance all affect the result.

Clear oil protects the timber but usually allows natural greying over time. Adding a suitable colour tone improves UV resistance and helps retain the timber colour longer.

A film finish can peel if applied over poorly prepared timber or left until it fully fails. Correct preparation and maintenance before breakdown are essential.

Penetrating oils are generally simpler to refresh because they do not create the same surface film. Coated finishes can retain colour longer but need timely maintenance before peeling or heavy breakdown.

Multiply length by width for each section and add the totals together. Use the calculator above and the selector will match the closest available kit size.

Contact Sealix for a custom recommendation and quantity calculation. Larger decks may need customised amounts based on coating condition, timber type and finish choice.

Yes. Send one full-deck photo, one close-up and photos of any peeling, dark or problem areas. Include the approximate deck size and anything you know about the existing coating.
