Why decks fail early
Failure usually starts before the first coat.
A good product cannot compensate for a contaminated surface, the wrong finishing system or maintenance that begins after the timber is already exposed.

Wrong product
Dense hardwoods, softwoods, exposed decks and sheltered decks do not all take protection the same way. The finish needs to suit the timber, condition, desired look and future maintenance.

A deck should be cleaned and refreshed while the finish is still serviceable. Waiting for bare, grey or peeling timber often turns simple maintenance into a full restoration.

Restore it effectively
Start with the deck's current condition.
The correct preparation path depends on what is already on the timber. Do not choose the finish until the old surface has been properly assessed and prepared.
Peeling, shiny or built-up finish
Remove the failed coating or excess oil first. Heavy sanding alone can leave old finish in the grain, between boards and around fixings.
Bare, grey, dirty or weathered timber
Deep-clean the surface to remove contamination and weathered material before rejuvenating it.
After either route
Rejuvenate and neutralise, rinse thoroughly, allow the timber to dry, complete a light preparation sand and then apply the chosen protection system.
